What is the next step when your migraine medication (like Imitrex, Relpax, Fioricet, Excedrin Migraine, and others) you use to manage the symptoms of your recurring migraines stops working?

Botox injections? Off-label migraine medication? Perhaps. However, many people are having lasting success with a little known specialty in chiropractic called upper cervical chiropractic.

It really comes down to the question – do you simply want to have your symptoms managed with some form of migraine medication or do you want to address the underlying problem so you can stop worrying about managing symptoms all the time?

Of course, when it’s put to you so bluntly you respond, I want to deal with the underlying problem. But chances are that most, if not all, of the interventions that were recommended by your medical doctors (and covered by your insurance plan) have been symptom management approaches.

Part of the challenge facing medical doctors is that migraines are the result a complex cascade of neurological events originating from the brain stem and pharmacology can only help mask the symptoms and surgery is not an option. Therefore, addressing the underlying causes of migraines is never a real possibility for them.

Surgery can cause a permanent change in how the body functions, but in the case of migraines there is nothing to surgically remove or change as the neurological structures almost always appear to be intact and normal when analyzed with MRI or CT. (MRI or CT comes back as “negative”, meaning nothing abnormal was found)

To begin addressing the underlying cause you need to explore what might trigger the abnormal neurological cascade of events in the brain stem. This is where upper cervical specific chiropractic has been shown to be very helpful. This specialized form of chiropractic care ensures the body’s nervous system is functioning in a very balanced manner by reducing or eliminating any nervous system interference from the top of the spine where the head and neck come together.

If you suffer from recurring migraines it’s never a bad idea to get an MRI or CT scan to rule out tumors or blood vessel issues, but if they come back clear or “negative” (no problems found) then upper cervical chiropractic may be your best option for long-term results.
